Multiperiod Planning for Optical Core Networks

For long-term operated communication networks, during the operation time several planning parameters can change considerably. In multiperiod planning the operational time dimension of a network is taken into account. In this thesis it is shown that multiperiod planning for optical networks can reduce the total cost of ownership. We provide an overview on the basic multiperiod concepts and address multiperiod optimization models for optical core networks. These optimization models are implemented as integer linear programs and solved with Branch-and-Bound or Branch-and-Cut methods. Comprehensive case studies for typical networks demonstrate applications and benefits of multiperiod planning. The studies take decreasing equipment costs, demand uncertainty, technology evolution and protection methods for optical networks into account.
