The year 2002 was the last year of the 5th Framework Programme of the European Commission, and characterised by a transition phase towards the current 6th Framework Programme. main topics of our work programme addressed issues of nucler waste transmutation and safety aspects of nuclear energy production, and these will remain the main topics of our research also in the following years. However, the need for maintaining the nuclear competence in Europe results in a widening of our research activities towards more basic physics problems.
