The Euratom Treaty, establishing the European Atomic Energy Community, governs primarily the activities of the European Union (EU) in the field of nuclear energy. The nuclear fission-related research activities co-sponsored by the European Commission are managed by the Directorate-General for Research and implemented through different four-year Euratom framework programmes. Within the key action 'Nuclear fission' of the Euratom fifth framework programme (FP-5), 1998-2002, the area 'Operational safety of existing installations' was composed of three sub-areas: 'Plant life extension and management' (cluster PLEM); 'Severe accident management' (cluster SAM); and 'Evolutionary concepts' (cluster EVOL). The cost of the 24 projects - contracted within the cluster SAM - amounted to about EUR 28.3 million, out of wich the EC contributed about 15.2 million.
