Carbohydrates play an important role in many biological and biochemical processes, including the fertilisation, cell differentiation and maturation, protein folding and degradation. Carbohydrates are also involved in a variety of recognition events, such as cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions. Many of these are immunologically relevant processes, namely inflammation host-pathogen interactions, immune response and health disorders, such as arthritis, Alzheimer's disease, among others. Carbohydrate-active enzymes(CAZymes) play key roles in glycobiology. They are involved in the synthesis and degradation of complex carbohydrates and glyco-conjugates.

Miguel Gama received his Ph.D. in Biological Engineering at Minho University, in Portugal, in 1996. He is currently Associate Professor with Habilitation at Minho University, where he directs the FUNCARB Laboratory, a research group with about 20 researchers. He has authored/edited 4 books, over 100 papers in international journals, and 2 patents. Was the co-founder of a spinoff from Minho University, BNCTechnologies, dedicated to the development of applications for bacterial cellulose. His research interests include enzyme technology - enzymatic degradation of biomass - and the development of biomaterials, in particular bacterial cellulose, self-assembled amphiphilic nanogels and injectable hydrogels, aiming the development of applications for tissue regeneration and drug delivery.
