The Giga-chip era is already beginning. New approaches to Giga-scale integration (GSI) are now required in response to paradigm shifts at the system and design level, such as merged logic/memory, multimedia, and portable applications. Key system issues required for GSI, especially for system on a chip are: low power, low cost, and high performance. These issues require new approaches to device and process technology beyond traditional Si scaling. This course has been designed to highlight timely topics on advanced CMOS technology that require an in-depth treatment which cannot be accommodated in the regular IEDM program. This is the taped short course of the annual International Electron Device Meeting held in 1997.
