Cutting-edge coverage of stem cell biology and applicationsFeaturing contributions from leading global experts, this authoritative volume addresses all major areas of stem cell biology and their potential therapeutic applications. The first part of the book covers embryonic stem cells and contains details on the emerging field of embryonic stem cell-based drug screening platforms. The second part deals with multipotent adult stem cells from different tissue types, and covers unique concepts such as cancer stem cells and tissue engineering-based approaches for designing microenvironments for tissue regeneration. Eighty pages of inserts with 113 color figures are included in this pioneering work.

Coverage includes:

Zebrafish, medaka, chicken embryonic, and mouse embryonic stem cells
Derivation of human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) from blastocysts
Treating diabetes with hESCs
hESCs as a model system to study human genetics
Application of hESCs in drug discovery
Adult stem cells for regenerative medicine and cancer therapies
Mesenchymal stem cells for neurodegenerative disease therapies
Dental pulp, hematopoietic, and spermatogonial stem cells
Epigenetic regulators of stem cell pluripotency
Cancer stem cells

Satish M Totey is currently Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder of Advance Neuroscience Allies Pvt. Ltd. A Ph.D from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, Totey was a faculty at the National Institute of Immunology from 1983 to 2001. He moved to industry in 2001 and became the Director of Stem Cell Research at Reliance Life Sciences, Mumbai, India. In 2004 he move to Bangalore as Chief Scientific Officer, Stempeutics Research Pvt. Ltd. He established a research and production laboratory at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He was also instrumental in industry scale manufacturing of mesenchymal stem cells from bone marrow, adipose tissues, dental pulp and umbilical cord. He is one of the pioneers in establishing human embryonic stem cell lines in the country and also established the first official clinical trials in India and Malaysia. Dr. Totey has published over 100 papers and edited 2 books and his research interests include neurodegenerative disorders. Kaushik D Deb is currently General Manager (Operations and Research) at ANSA Pvt. Ltd., leading research in the areas of epigenomics, directed stem cell trafficking and drug screening. A PhD from Jiwaji University, India, he completed post-doctoral training in the areas of stem cells and tissue engineering from universities in the US and Canada. He also has an executive MBA degree from the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore.Dr. Deb was with Stempeutics Research Pvt. Ltd. as Group Leader for human embryonic stem cell program, and was involved in course design and establishment of the Manipal Institute of Regenerative Medicine, the first of its kind in India. He has published several peer-reviewed research papers and book chapters, and is also a reviewer and editor of several international journals. He is a founder member of the Stem Cell Research Forum of India (SCRFI) and the Society of Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine India (STERMI).
