Structured around personal stories, this book provides a rigorous review of current thinking and research on the physician life cycle. It considers the trajectories and factors that influence a doctor’s development over decades of a medical career.

Taking an integrated approach, the authors consider the formal stages of a physician’s training including medical school, residency training and practice, and review discourses around professionalism, competency-based education, lifelong learning, expertise development, reflection, and narrative that merge into the construct of medical professional identity formation.

Shmuel Reis, MD, MHPE, is a family physician in northern Israel in his 47th year of practice. He is a faculty member at the Holon Institute of Technology, where he teaches courses such as The Doctor in the Digital Age and Patient-Doctor Discourse in the Digital Age at the institute’s new BSc in Digital Medical Technologies program. He is the former Academic Head of the Center for Medical Education at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem Faculty of Medicine, and former Head of the School for Competencies Education in Residency of the Israeli Medical Association Scientific Council (Israel’s equivalent of the ACGME). He is Co-Chair of the Lancet Commission on medicine, Nazism and the Holocaust (MNH) and course director for Israeli faculty development of MNH teachers, as well as for both Hebrew and English MNH massive open online courses (MOOCs). His major research and education foci are medicine, Nazism and the Holocaust, patient-doctor-computer communication, and the physician life cycle. She writes and speaks regularly on transforming medical education, clinical skills and professionalism remediation, educational technology, mentoring and professional identity formation assessment. She co-directs the US site of the University of Maastricht’s Master of Health Professions Education (MHPE) program and leads several annual mentor development programs. In 2023, along with Dr. Calvin L. Chou, she published the second edition of Remediation in Medical Education: A Mid-Course Correction and received two national career awards – the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) John P.
