Neoliberal theory on higher education highlights the challenges faced by academics in the "new times" of academia. The highly competitive environment and increased non-research duties put academics' time and dedication at risk. This is especially true for early career academics. However more research is needed to understand the experience of new generation academics that find themselves in this space.

Amasa Ndofirepi, Ph.D. (2013), Sol Plaatje University and University of Johannesburg, is Full Professor of Philosophy and History of Education. He has co-edited several books including Decolonising African University Knowledges Vols 1 & 2 (xxx, 2023) and Unyoking African University Knowledge Vol 1 (xxx, 2023). Doniwen Pietersen, Ph.D. (2019) & Ph.D. (2023), University of Pretoria and University of Freestate respectively, is Associate Professor of Philosophy of Education at University of South Africa (Unisa). He has published several articles in International and DHET accredited journals. Percy Sepeng, Ph.D. (2011), is Professor of Mathematics Education and Dean of Students at University of KwaZulu-Natal. He has published books, book chapter, articles in peer reviewed journals and conference proceedings in Mathematics [Education]. He supervised over 30 Master and Doctoral students. Raymond Nkwenti Fru, Ph.D. (2018), University of KwaZulu-Natal, is a senior lecturer of History and Social Science Education at the Sol Plaatje University. He is Teaching Advancement at Universities (TAU) fellow. He has published extensively in the areas of school textbooks and other discourses in History Education. Alan Felix, Ph.D. (2021), Cape Peninsula University of Technology, is Geography and Social Science Lecturer in the Intermediary Phase in the Faculty of Education. His research interests are in geography education and the use of ICTs. He co-authored an article titled, A wake-up call: Equity, inequality and Covid-19 emergency remote teaching and learning (2020). Medson Mapuya, Ph.D. (2020), Central University of Technology, Free State, is a lecturer in Accounting Education and Higher Education Studies at Sol Plaatje University. He has published several articles in Accounting Education and Higher Education and has presented his research work in local and International Conferences. His research interest is in the learning experiences of students in higher education.
