This work is intended for future teachers and practicing teachers who are pursuing further education, as well as secondary audiences including students of philosophy, future church educators, and clergy. The first part of the book traces developments in Philosophy of Education from Rousseau through the twentieth century. The second part describes Christian approaches to educational philosophy, including a chapter on special education. The Christian perspective is broad enough to appeal to Catholics as well as Protestants. Jacques Maritain represents the catholic perspective regarding educational philosophy, and Nicholas Wolterstorff represents the protestant point of view.

Gregory Mellema is Professor of Philosophy emeritus at Calvin University, USA. He is the author of six books in the field of ethics. The most recent are Complicity and Moral Accountability and Sin. He has published in 30 different peer-reviewed journals, including American Philosophical Quarterly, Canadian Journal of Philosophy, Philosophical Studies, Australasian Journal of Philosophy, Journal of Ethics, Analysis, and Philosophia. He received his PhD in Philosophy from the University of Massachusetts, USA, and earned an MBA from the University of Michigan, USA. For many years he taught courses in Philosophy of Education to future teachers. He has authored entries in several reference works, such as the Oxford Companion to Philosophy, the New Catholic Encyclopedia, and the Encyclopedia of Applied Ethics.
