This book is a comprehensive account of racial and ethnic differences in the frequencies of various diseases throughout the world. It provides a methodological framework for understanding the concepts of race and ethnic group, the use of these concepts in epidemiology and the interpretation of epidemiological studies of disease. Each chapter provides descriptive information on the relative frequencies of specific diseases and the methods used in studies, as well as a systematic discussion of the interpretation of the racial/ethnic differences described. These discussions range from errors in measurement to socioeconomic differences between groups. Genetic and biological factors are also considered.

Anthony P. Polednak is Associate Professor, Department of Community and Preventive Medicine at the State University of New York, Stony Brook. He received his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees from Harvard University.
