"e;The United States was racked by a dispute over the election of President...the verge of another civil conflict...Paul Leland Haworth, Lecturer in History, Columbia University...has been especially successful in disentangling the motives."e; -NY Times, July 21, 1906"e;An interesting account of an election which...did not elect...was decided by a device never used before."e; -Boston Evening Transcript, Dec. 19, 1906"e;The Disputed Presidential Election of 1876 by Paul Leland Haworth...embraces...a farrago of partisan misinformation...certainly a very unfair and crude thinker, whose examination is worthless."e; -The Courier-Journal (Louisville), Aug. 8, 1906"e;Dr. Paul Leland Haworth...died today...he was a fellow in American history at Columbia University...received his Ph.D. there...head of the department of history at Butler University."e; -Indianapolis News, March 24, 1938How similar was the disputed presidential election of 1876 to the events of the presidential election of 2020 and were the disputes finally resolved constitutionally in 1876?In 1906, Paul Leland Haworth (1876-1936) sorted out the events of the controversial 1876 election in his book titled, "e;The Hayes-Tilden Disputed Presidential Election of 1876."e;The results of the 1876 presidential election remain among the most disputed ever. Although it is not disputed that Tilden outpolled Hayes in the popular vote, there were wide allegations of electoral fraud, election violence, and other disfranchisement of predominately Republican black voters. The question of who should have been awarded these electoral votes is the source of the continued controversy. In introducing his book, Haworth writes: "e;The book is based in large measure upon a collection of more than twenty thousand pages of congressional material, consisting of debates in Congress, of evidence gathered by various investigating committees, and of the proceedings before the electoral commission. This collection constitutes perhaps the most extensive and exhaustive one upon any subject of equal importance in American history."e;About the author: Paul Leland Haworth (1876-1936) was an American author, educator, explorer and politician, born at West Newton, Indiana. Haworth graduated from Indiana University in 1899. He was a member of the faculties of several schools and colleges, including Columbia and Bryn Mawr. From 1918-1919 he was acting professor of history at Indiana University. Haworth was a member of the Indiana House of Representatives from 1920-1921. Haworth made exploratory trips to the Canadian Rockies and discovered new mountains and lakes in 1916 and 1919.Other books by the author include: The Path of Glory (1911)America in Ferment (1915)George Washington, Farmer (1915)The United States in Our Own Times, 1865-1920 (1924)Trail Makers in the Northwest (1921)
