This book discusses the connotation and function of social governance and elaborates on social governance thought in classical Marxism, Mao Zedong’s social governance thought, and social governance thought in socialism with Chinese characteristics, especially in Xi Jinping’s New Era. Together, these components constitute the basic theory of social governance in China. Moreover, the book clarifies ancient and modern social governance thought in China and analyzes institutional innovations, practices, and experiences of Chinese social governance. It depicts the evolution and reform of social governance in China both vertically and horizontally. In turn, it addresses the overall system, fundamental institutions, hierarchy, field, and mode of China’s social governance, as well as its connection to national security. It discusses major issues and their causes, together with enhancing mechanisms. In closing, it outlines future trends in Chinese social governance, and its role in and effectson the global governance system.

Liqun Wei, Professor and Doctoral Supervisor, has successively acted as Member of the Party Group and Secretary-General at the State Planning Commission, Deputy Director of the Office of the Central Leading Group on Financial and Economic Affairs of the CPC, Director of the Research Office of the State Council and Party Secretary of the Chinese Academy of Governance. He was Member and Deputy Chairman of the Culture, History and Learning Committee of the Eleventh Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. He was Member of the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Central Committees of the Communist Party of China (CPC). He has participated in or led the work to draft a large number of important documents of the Central Committee of the CPC and the State Council as well as important speeches of leaders. He has led many significant research projects and made a large batch of scientific research and political consulting achievements. He has successively worked as Professor and Doctoral Supervisor at the Renmin University of China, Beijing Normal University, Chinese Academy of Governance, and China Center for International Economic Exchanges.He was appointed to serve as Dean of the China Academy of Social Management and the School of Sociology of Beijing Normal University, respectively, in October 2010 and January 2015. Now, he holds an additional portfolio of external positions: Member of the National Expert Consulting Committee for Philosophic and Social Science Studies, Leader of the applied economics group of the National Social Science Fund, Member of the Consulting Committee for the Marxist Theory Research and Construction Project of the CPC Central Committee.He was elected as one of the “100 Economists influencing the Economic Construction of the New China for 60 years” in 2009, names as a “ Representative Person of China Tank Construction” in 2014, rated as one of the “China Famous Scientists in the 20th Century” in 2015, elected as one of the “top 10 Think Tank Persons of the Year” in 2016, and awarded one of “40 People Building Think Tanks in China, Saluting to the 40th Anniversary of Reform and Opening up” in 2018.
