Medical Response to Adult Sexual Assault, Second Edition provides evidence-based research on diagnosis, treatment, and examination in cases of sexual violence and assault. Survivors of sexual assault face any number of unique challenges both on the path to physical and psychological recovery and in navigating the investigative and judicial processes related to their traumatic experiences. Medical practitioners who work with these survivors require informed expertise in order to support their patients’ safety and personal well-being.

The authors and contributors, a team of expert physicians, nurses, attorneys, and other multidisciplinary practitioners, have fully revised and updated Medical Response to Child Sexual Abuse to reflect contemporary best practices in the investigation and treatment of sexual violence. Any professionals who work with victims of sexual assault will find this latest edition essential to their responsibilities and to the renewed well-being of those in their care.

Linda Ledray is the founder and director of the Minneapolis-based Sexual Assault Resource Service (SARS), one of the first SANE programs, which she developed in 1977. She is also an adjunct faculty member at the University of Minnesota where she has taught in the School of Nursing and the Psychology Department. She has been active in humanitarian relief missions to Honduras, Thailand, and Bosnia and she has taught nationally and internationally on the topic of victim assistance, SANE-SART program development, and program evaluation. Linda Ledray was on active duty mobilized at the 2nd General Hospital in Landstuhl, Germany. She is the section editor for the Journal of Emergency Nursing, SANE section and has published many articles and books including Recovering from Rape (1994) and the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Development and Operation Guide (1999). Ann Burgess is an internationally recognized pioneer in the assessment and treatment of victims of trauma and abuse. She has received several honors for her work including the Sigma Theta Tau International Audrey Hepburn Award and the American Nurses’ Association Hildegard Peplau Award. She co-founded one of the first hospital-based crisis counseling programs at Boston City Hospital. She has worked with the FBI Academy special agents to study serial offenders and the links between child abuse, juvenile delinquency, and subsequent perpetration. Her recent research includes studies in elder abuse in nursing homes, cyberstalking, and Internet sex crimes. She is currently a professor at the Boston College William F.
