Examines the historical context of jazz in light of the changing situation of the African-American community and notes the tension created by the structures of segregation, stereotypes and prejudice. Music was one of the few fields where racial stereotypes did not hinder black achievement.
Thomas Hennessey is an associate professor at Fayetteville State University in Fayettevilee, North Carolina. He has published several articles on the history of jazz and has been the host-producer of a weekly jazz radio program for more than a decade.
