The first section of the book features readings devoted to the social construction of race. The readings in the second portion of the book explore racial history, identity, and politics. The third and final section contains readings that closely examine racial equality. The sections and readings feature pre-reading questions to help stimulate critical thinking and further discussion.

Marci Bounds Littlefield, Ph.D. earned her Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Texas, Austin, M.P.A. in public affairs from the Lyndon B. Johnson Graduate School of Public Affairs, and B.A. in government and African American studies from Oberlin College. She is an associate professor of sociology at Borough of Manhattan Community College, where she teaches courses in sociology, marriage and family, and comparative ethnic relations. Her research interests include gender, race, and social inequality.
