October 1939, World War II has begun. Poland is occupied, Danzig annexed to Germany. For the ten year old Michael and his familiy, living at Danzig, it seems that they have nowhere to go.

G. Michael Eisenstadt taught European and Russian history at Queens College after completing the Master Degree at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, and completing a two year course at the Russian Institute at Columbia University in New York. After leaving Queens College, he joined the Foreign Service of the United States and served at American Embassies in Eastern and Western Europe, as well as at the United States Information Agency in Washington D.C., completing 32 years of service. Upon his retirement from the Foreign Service, he taught foreign policy courses at New York University, and was a Senior Research Fellow at the East European Institute at Columbia University for two years. While in the Army, he served in Military Intelligence at Berlin Command, Berlin, Germany for two years during the Cold War. In New York he has worked with the ecumenical Appeal of Conscience Foundation that promotes human and religious rights throughout the world.
