This text sketches the urbanization of Havana over its 500 years of history. It analyzes the city's urban development and cultural importance and the environmental problems that this highly populated city has to overcome to develop successfully into the next millennium. The hegemonic growth of the city is analyzed as are the important economic factors that have shaped its development. Havana is still at the forefront of urban design and planning, despite its recent economic decline.
