N. E. Upham joined HMS Worcester the Thames Nautical Training College, in 1941 for pre-sea training, on completion of which he joined the Union Castle Mail Steamship Company as a cadet. From 1959 to 1967 he was assistant marine superintendent for the company at Southampton and then spent five years in command of vessels managed by Cayzer Irvine and Company. He later joined the staff of the National Maritime Museum, where he was Deputy Head of the Ships Department until his retirement. He is a Younger Brother of Trinity House.
