It is divided into four parts that look at ways of knowing, the professionals, constructing identities and women's bodies. In the conclusion the author discusses the implications of adopting a feminist and sociological approach to health care practice.

Julie Kent is Senior Lecturer in Sociology at the University of the West of England, Bristol. She has a nursing background and completed a PhD about midwifery education. She is co-editor of Women, Research and Careers. Her current research is on human implant technologies.
