In reality, as with most battles, it was something of a shambles, lurching from crisis to crisis until the eventual bridgehead was secured. Ken Ford is a well-known and prolific historian of the Second World War. He has established a reputation for producing graphic accounts, often based on first-hand testimony, of D-Day, the Normandy campaign and the Allied advance into Germany. He has also written books on the war in the Western Desert and Italy.
