In 2006, the Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF) and National Centre for Research on Europe (NCRE), University of Canterbury, New Zealand, initiated a unique major comparative study of attitudes and citizens perceptions of the EU in Asia which, by 2009, has involved 12 locations in Asia (all Asian ASEM countries will be examined by 2011). In each locality, the project systematically assessed EU daily representations in reputable local news media, as well as EU imagery among the general public and national stakeholders. In a serious effort to reinvigorate studies of EU-Asia relations, to support new generation of EU-Asia researchers, and to create new academic networks, ASEF and NCRE held the first Yong Academics Workshop (YAW) at the College of Europe in Bruges in September 2008. It involved twenty early career academics from Europe and Asia. Using data from the transnational project The EU through the Eyes of Asia, the YAW participants developed their individual case-studies. This volume presents the selection of the best ones, addressing the perceptions of the EU as normative and economic.
The Series "Transformation, Development, and Regionalization in Greater Asia" reflects Asia's increasing relevance and importance for International and Foreign Policy Studies today. Asia's experiences with transforming political systems, development processes, and regional cooperation demand special attention. Asia, which is made up of nation states and related subregional and regional actors, constitutes a Subject for studies in social sciences, economy, law and history. In particular, Asia provides interesting experiences and models for political, economic, and socio-cultural processes - including progress, stagnation, and regression - and thus enriches the theoretical debate. In addition to Asian studies and intra-Asian regionalization studies, this book Series covers both the relations between Greater Asia and Europe and Asia's role in the international system and participation in Global Governance. It is hoped that this Series will stimulate further interdisciplinary research on Greater Asia and will encourage cooperation between Asian and European scholars.
