This innovative text includes the most current readings that will help teachers provide a rich educational experience for adolescents throughout the middle and secondary curriculum--while nourishing their love of reading.  This is not an encyclopedic reference book of the past--but rather a cutting edge resource for teachers who want to connect with their techno-savvy 21st century students and in turn connect them to the literature of today.  Using themes of exploration and connecting to literature--the authors emphasize actual reading of books, rather than reading about them.  The authors also encourage using the Internet to expand our knowledge and interest of literature.  Finally, the text contains the most current materials that will get adolescents reading–horror, humor, mystery, science fiction, fantasy, graphic novels and comic books.

A former school library media specialist and public librarian, Dr. Katherine Bucher has written several books including Teaching in the Middle School (2009), Classroom Management; Models Applications and Cases (2007), and Books about the Middle East (2008), as well as numerous articles and book chapters.  In 2008, she retired from the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia where she served as assistant department chair and graduate program director for the school library program.   KaaVonia Hinton is an assistant professor in the Darden College of Education at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. She is the author of Angela Johnson: Poetic Prose (2006) and Sharon Draper: Embracing Literacy (2009), and co-author (with Gail K. Dickinson) of Integrating Multicultural Literature in Libraries and Classrooms in Secondary Schools (2007).
