Do you remember how you learnt to talk when you were a baby? Do you think that you could learn another language now if you had to?
Well, Yaz is not so sure!
It is her first day at her new school in a new country where she doesn't speak the language. What if she needs to pee and the teacher doesn't understand her? What if nobody wants to make friends with her because she can't understand what they are saying?
She is sure of only one thing: her detective instinct ... But will it help her to solve the mystery of this new language?
This fun, engaging story will make kids smile and fill them with confidence about learning a new language. After all, they already did it once, when they were babies, so why can't they do it again?
As a medical doctor, Ayse Ozlem Yilmaz has spent more than a decade working as an advisor within the pharmaceutical industry on projects aimed to treat and cure children's diseases. Born and raised in Turkiye, she moved to the UK with her husband and young daughter in 2018. Observing her daughter's experiences learning English in a new school and her own experiences of working with refugee agencies, Ayse was inspired to write a story for children and families who are navigating the challenges of adjusting to new environments and forming new friendships. The Long Garden Detective is her first book. Mavisu Demirag is an award winning illustrator, with 15 books published nationally and internationally. Her most recent endeavour involved illustrating the official museum book for the Istanbul Museum of Modern Art. Currently, a life-size mock-up from this project is on display at the museum.
