This booklet lists the maximum permissible concentrations (MAK values) of almost 500 chemical compounds to which people are exposed at work, and classifies over 160 such substances as carcinogens or suspected carcinogens.
This booklet lists the maximum permissible concentrations (MAK values) of almost 500 chemical compounds to which people are exposed at work, and classifies over 160 such substances as carcinogens or suspected carcinogens. They are determined and revised annually by a commission of experts from all relevant scientific disciplines appointed by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft. The report is recommended reading for toxicologists, chemists and industrial physicians, as well as research scientists with an interest in laboratory safety and all those involved in the wider sense in the establishment of health and safety regulations.

Part 1 Maximum concentrations at the workplace: significance and usage of MAK values (maximum concentrations in the workplace); list of compounds - substances with assigned MAK values (including those substances listed in section III), substances for which, as yet, no MAK value can be established, substances with MAK values which have been examined for their potential hazard during pregnancy but which could not be assigned to any of the groups; carcinogenic working materials; dusts and fumes (airborne particulates) - general definitions, occupations health, definitions applying to the measurement of dusts and fumes, as correlated to response, measurement of particulates, fibrogenic dusts, general threshold limit value for dust, period of evaluation; special working materials - organic peroxides, gasoline, turpentine, metal-working fluids. Part 2 Biological tolerance values for working materials: significance and usage of BAT values; list of compounds; carcinogenic working materials. Part 3 Constitution and procedures of the commission for the investigation of health hazards of chemical compounds in the work area. Appendices: substances listed in the Yellow Pages until 1991 for which the Examination of MAK Values and BAt Values was completed in 1991/1992; substances being examined for the establishment of MAK and BAT values; procedure of the commission for the investigation of health hazards of chemical compounds in the work area for making changes in or additions to the list of MAK and BAT values.
