He has published numerous books on German philosophy and on Hegel in particular, including Hegel's Phenomenology: The Sociality of Reason (Cambridge, 1994), Hegel: A Biography (Cambridge, 2000), and German Philosophy 1760–1860: The Legacy of Idealism (Cambridge, 2002).
