An historical atlas charting the Celts from their origins in the Bronze Age to their present-day diaspora, with colour maps supported by text and illustrations. It deals separately with Continental, Atlantic and Modern Celts, taking into consideration the latest research and academic controversies.
In a series of 54 stunning full-colour maps covering 3,000 years and spanning the whole of Europe, this book comprehensively charts the dramatic history of the Celts from their origins in the Bronze Age to their present-day diaspora. Taking into account the latest research and academic controversies over the historical identity of the Celts, the atlas deals separately with the Continental Celts (Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Anatolia), the Atlantic Celts (Britain and Ireland) and the Modern Celts and the current state of Celtic culture.

John Haywood is a Fellow at the University of Lancaster and Fellow of the Royal Society of Great Britain. Among his previous books are Encyclopaedia of the Viking Age (Thames & Hudson, 2000), The Penguin Historical Atlas of the Vikings, The Cassell Atlas of World History, and The Ancient Civilizations of the Near East and Mediterranean.

The Continental Celts: the Hallstatt and La Tene cultures; the migrations into Italy, Iberia, Greece and Anatolia and the beginnings of state formation and urbanization; Roman domination and the fate of Celtic culture under Roman rule; Brittany and the Bretons from the Dark Ages until their absorption by France. The Atlantic Celts: Iron Age Britain and Ireland; the ultimate failure of the Roman conquest; the resurgence of Celtic civilization in the Dark Ages; King Arthur; the history of Gaelic Ireland; the Welsh princedoms; and the making of Scotland. The Modern Celts: the revival of the Celtic identity, from the Celtomania of the 18th century; the global diaspora; the current state of Celtic culture.
