Expert advice on staying safe in the outdoors from one of America’s best-known survival writers
The best way to survive an extreme situation in the wilderness is to avoid it in the first place, says Rich Johnson in this refreshing new guide to outdoor survival skills. Avoiding both the rigid "primitive skills" ideology and macho, military/survivalist posturing, Johnson focuses on proven, easily implemented methods to handle emergency situations in an easy, low-stress manner.
Rich Johnson is one of America's best-known experts on wilderness survival. He has written survival columns for Outdoor Life since 2001, Camping Life since 1997, and Off Road from 1990 through 1997. An Army Special Forces veteran, Rich lived for a year in a remote region in Utah with his wife and children, staying in caves, a wikiup, and an abandoned mine shack, and eating snakes, lizards, chipmunks, rabbits, insects, and just about anything else that wandered by. Rich then worked as a survival instructor at Nantahalla Outdoor Center and other outdoor skills schools. Rich has been in publishing for 30 years. He was editorial director for books and magazines at Tex Smith Publishing; has written several non-fiction books; written and starred in survival videos (DVDs); and published thousands of articles on outdoor subjects for magazines including Boating, American Rifleman, Skin Diver, Mother Earth News, Organic Gardening, and Motor Home.
