Nelson region occupies the northwest corner of the South Island between the Tasman Sea and the Southern Alps. This area has a fascinating history, much of which can be experienced on short walks throughout the three national parks, its mountain ranges, bush-wreathed hills or golden beaches and rugged rivers. The short walks in this book include walks around Nelson City, Richmond, Motueka, Takaka, Collingwood, Tapawera, Cobb Valley, Lake Rotoiti, St Amaud, Farewell Spit and Murchison. There are good, graded walks through several national parks including the Abel Tasman, Kahurangi and Nelson Lakes, as well as several beach walks. Detailed access notes and travelling times, a walk-grade and general points of interest are given with each walk, including descriptions of the geography, climate, wildlife and fascinating notes on the history of Maori and European occupation of the area.
