You can find scientific information on psychosis and schizophrenia in books and on the internet, but it is difficult to find a detailed overview of the disorders, and to surmise what information is reliable and relevant. This book makes scientific and clinical knowledge accessible to patients, their loved ones and others (teachers, nurses, students and doctors). It offers a comprehensive summary of what scientific research has yielded so far, and knowledge about symptoms, causes, mechanisms and treatment. This knowledge may help in understanding and overcoming problems and making decisions about treatment.

Lieuwe de Haan (MD, PhD) is a psychiatrist and professor in psychotic disorders at the University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Since 1993, he has devoted his professional life to patients with psychotic disorders. He leads an early psychosis intervention clinic and the psychosis research group at the Amsterdam University Medical Center and at Arkin in Amsterdam. He is involved in many international research collaborations concerning psychosis. Together with colleagues, he has published over 700 peer-reviewed manuscripts. His research interests include: subjective experiences of antipsychotic treatment; genetic risks, other biological and psychosocial factors and outcomes of psychosis; obsessive-compulsive symptoms in patients with psychotic disorders; psychopharmacological and family treatment of cannabis use in patients with psychosis; and dose-reduction of antipsychotic medication after remission of the first psychotic episode. He is dedicated to educating patients and their loved ones about psychosis and schizophrenia.
