Raising Empowered Learners gives actionable tools rooted in journalistic strategies that help educators and parents inspire students to excel and develop resiliency as we emerge into a post-COVID world.
In Raising Empowered Learners: Curiosity, Character, and Confidence, author Ed Madison explores how tapping into a student’s intrinsic interests through journalistic learning can spark their imaginations, rekindle their spirit, and build their resilience. The approach uses a journalistic lens to inform study of English language arts, social studies, and science. Students engage in research, interviewing, writing, presenting, and publishing their findings.

Ed Madison’s multifaceted career in media and journalism began as a high school intern at the Washington Post owned CBS television affiliate in Washington, D.C. during the height of Watergate. Madison is an associate professor at the University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication and a College of Education affiliated faculty member. His research centers on how journalistic learning methods can enhance overall student achievement.
