The role of the chief financial officer (CFO) is critical to the success or failure of any company as they are central to the financial performance of the business. In Masters of Money, chartered accountant and financial consultant KC Rottok Chesaina interviews 30 chief financial officers from South Africa’s top JSE-listed companies to uncover their strategies for success.

Masters of Money takes us behind the scenes and provides an opportunity for finance professionals, entrepreneurs, managers, and anyone interested in the world of finance to learn from the best in the business. While these CFOs might not divulge any trade secrets, they give readers the inside track to corporate success. They share valuable lessons learnt over many years in finance, including the key elements of an effective strategy, the power of good communication, how to lead teams to high performance, why values are important in the workplace, and how to remain calm in dealing with crises like the Covid-19 pandemic or the company IT system being hacked.

Their stories show the human face behind the number cruncher and help to explain the x factor required to rise to the top. Featured companies include: Capitec, Nedbank, First Rand, Massmart, Pick ’n Pay, Illovo Sugar, Nando’s, Harmony Gold, Mr Price, Impala Platinum, Anglo American, Discovery, Barloworld, MTN, Aspen Pharma, Old Mutual, Discovery, Dischem, Sanlam, Investec and Royal Bafokeng.

KC Rottok Chesaina is a qualified Chartered Accountant with an Honours and Master’s degrees in Commerce from Wits University. At the age of 28, he was appointed as profit-sharing partner of RSM in Johannesburg, an audit firm. Chesaina also obtained certificates in Radio, Financial and Creative Journalism from Wits University. In 2010, he launched The African Professional magazine. Apart from editing The African Professional, Chesaina frequently writes for other publications including City Press and Accountancy SA.
