A bittersweet account of a declining mind and a rambling country estate
Mapperton Moments is a diary of events at Mapperton in Dorset, where John Montagu was wrestling with the twin challenges of running a country estate and making decisions about a father suffering from dementia. Although officially handing over control, `Hinch' as he was known, remained in the house and still thought he was in charge. Embedded in an evocative description of the day to day running of Mapperton in all seasons, are moments of confrontation, at times painful, at other times funny, which anyone with a relative with dementia will recognise. John's father bought Mapperton House in 1956 after he left Hinchingbrooke, the family home in Huntingdon for over 300 years. John and Caroline ran Mapperton Estate from 1983 until handing over management to their son Luke in 2016. The estate includes farms, residential property, a cafe and tourist facilities surrounding Mapperton House and Gardens.

John Montagu is an editor, writer, aid worker and, since 1999, an elected hereditary peer. Born in 1943, he went to Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge, getting a degree in History, French and German. He worked in Europe before joining the Bodley Head as an assistant editor in 1966. He and his wife Caroline spent a year in India in 1968-69 and in 1974 he joined the staff and later the board of Christian Aid. He has been a council member of Anti-Slavery International and has worked for CARE and Save the Children. In the House of Lords he speaks on international development, post conflict countries and other humanitarian issues, and is currently a member of the European Union Foreign Affairs Sub-Committee.
