Ever since the first Indian Jones film hit the silver screen in 1984, there has been speculation as to whether the fictional character was inspired by real-life. Indiana MacCreagh is the stand-out candidate. An intrepid explorer, adventurer and big-game hunter, he was also a prolific author whose writings entertained millions around the world.
MacCreagh spoke several languages and was an entomologist, anthropologist, pilot, musician and photographer. He travelled extensively overseas, including South America, India, Burma, Tibet and Africa and led expeditions to the Amazon and Ethiopia in search of the Ark of the Covenant. He also served in both World Wars.
MacCreagh enjoyed a remarkable life but the details are something of a mystery and full of enigmas. This book reveals the truth behind the legend and explores whether MacCreagh was the inspiration for the Indiana Jones stories. It is a biography, a tale of adventure and something of a detective story. Based on detailed research, the author challenges the accepted version of MacCreagh’s life and provides a fascinating insight into the man and his achievements.
Following an honours degree in Economics from Sheffield University, the author spent almost thirty years working for various manufacturing businesses in the UK and overseas. In 1995 he moved to Tatarstan in Russia, leading a team of international consultants at a large automotive company and in 1997 he became an advisor to the UK Foreign Office and the Department for International Development covering Russia until 2002. He subsequently worked as a management consultant on various projects in Russia and Ukraine and since 2001, he has been a member of the Flood Risk Management Committee for Wales. Born in Royal Leamington Spa, the author spent his early years in Canada and has since lived in Switzerland, France, the USA and Russia and has travelled to seventy different countries. He was awarded an MBE in the 2018 Queen's New years Honours List.
