An explanation of how the Tibetan approach to disease as part of an holistic tradition views and treats a variety of illnesses, including clogged or hardened arteries, hepatitis, arthritis, migraine, irritable bowel, cystitis, chronic fatigue and the common cold.
From its inception over 2500 years ago, Tibetan medicine accepted the close relationship between mind, body and spirit, recognizing that emotions, diet, behaviour, climate and many other factors, could directly affect the physical workings of the body. Today, many insights preserved in the Tibetan tradition, including the use of complex herbal formulas, meditation techniques and dietary and behavioural changes, have been shown to be highly relevant to the treatment and prevention of modern diseases. This volume explains how the Tibetan approach to disease (as part of an holistic tradition) views and treats a variety of illnesses, including clogged or hardened arteries, hepatitis, arthritis, migraine, irritable bowel, cystitis, chronic fatigue and the common cold. It shows how Western medical research and clinical trials have substantiated many of the claims of Tibetan medicine and provides some safe and effective alternatives to conventional drug therapy.

Dr Sarah Sallon qualified in medicine at the University College Hospital, London in 1975. After specialising in Paediatrics, she emigrated to Israel in 1983, where she continued her specialisation in Paediatric Gastroenterology at the Hadassah Medical Organisation in Jerusalem. Parallel to her clinical work, she began research studies in diarrhoeal disease and malnutrition at the Kuvin centre for tropical diseases at the Hebrew University. Her interest in infectious diseases led her to Ethiopia, Hong Kong, China, Tibet and India. During this period, she developed a keen interest in traditional medicine, working and studying with local practitioners. In 1994, she founded the Natural Medicine Research Unit at Hadassah Hospital, which researches various aspects of complementary/alternative medicine. NMRU has published papers on Tibetan medicine and has been the subject of several documentaries and news items (CNN, Discovery, Sky). In 1995, the Dalai Lama, on his first public visit to Israel, visited Hadassah Hospital to offer his support for the unique research carried out on traditional Tibetan medicine by NMRU.
