Autor

Peter Abaci, M.D., graduated magna cum laude from UC San Diego in 1987 and performed his anesthesia residency at the USC School of Medicine, where he also served as Chief Resident during his last year. Dr. Abaci's interest in treating patients through an interdisciplinary approach led him to complete his fellowship in Pain Management at UC San Francisco in 1996. This training exposed him to the multidisciplinary model and the importance of taking psychosocial factors into consideration when treating pain. Dr. Abaci is board certified in Pain Management and Anesthesia by the American Board of Anesthesia, and serves as a Qualified Medical Examiner. Since 1996, Dr. Abaci has worked in private practice in the San Francisco Bay Area, and co-founded what today is known as the Bay Area Pain and Wellness Center (BAPWC). He has helped create numerous interdisciplinary programs, including the Functional Restoration Program, and created a state-of-the-art facility for BAPWC in 2005. Dr. Abaci is one of the first to transform the traditional pain clinic model into a true wellness center, where patients receive modalities like art therapy, tai chi, and life coaching in conjunction with more traditional medical treatments. His center is nationally acclaimed; having become one of the only CARF (Council of Accredited Rehabilitation Facilities) accredited pain centers in the western United States, and recently received a Center of Excellence Award Honorable Mention by the American Pain Society. Liberty Mutual, one of the largest insurance companies in the world, designates Dr. Abaci's Functional Restoration Program as a preferred provider. In addition to his practice, Dr. Abaci also serves as a volunteer clinical instructor at the Stanford Pain Center, and lives with his wife and two children in the Bay Area.
