Dr Robert Keats (Bob) got his diagnosis of Motor Neurone Disease in the summer of 2015 and died in April 2017.
As a Humanist and Green Party member, and with a background in project management, he organised his non religious funeral meticulously. That experience led him to write "How to die well without god". The book represents an interpretation of death untainted by religious superstition, but which identifies how to die well and also help those affected by loss and grief. He was comfortable to share with Epicurus his views that life is about love, friendships and shared experiences and not about greed, money or power.

Bob has always been an organiser: In his professional career he worked in education and housing administration; was a university lecturer and chief examiner for a professional body, as well as chairing conferences, a housing association and a project for people recovering from substance misuse. In his personal time he chaired the local fete committee, was an active parish councillor, a committee member for the local youth club and rowing club, and stood as a Green Party candidate for the Isle of Wight. He organised (and enjoyed) some incredible parties and arranged activist meetings and events in his local community. His PhD exploring the teaching of creativity in the professions was awarded in 2015, a month after getting his diagnosis of Motor Neurone Disease. His arboretum will continue to grow and expand through the care of his friends and family.
