A follow-up to the originally self-published cult paddling classic, Halfway to Halfway (2012), Halfway to Halfway and Back is a collection of stories by, and usually about, river guides and outfitters, compiled by one of the most respected outfitters in North America. The tales focus on river related events that usually have little to do with whitewater. Many don't even take place on a river. All say a lot about the culture of guiding and the people attracted to wild places and the odd things that happen once they get there. These are the stories shared around a campfire after a day on the water. Some are funny, some sad, some quirky, but they all come from personal river experiences and lifelong friendships. There is an odd thing that brings folks back for river trips. They usually come the first time because of the excitement of rapids and whitewater. They come back for another trip because of all the other stuff that happens in-between the rapids. This book captures some of that magic, the memories and good times running a river with friends fosters.

Bob Volpert started Idaho River Journeys-named in 2015 by Men's Journal as one of the Top 9 Outfitters in North America-in 1978, and today outfits on Idaho's Middle Fork of the Salmon, Main Salmon, the Rogue River in Oregon and the Kern River in Southern California. He and his wife Mary Papale live in Point Reyes Station, California. Dick Linford started ECHO River Trips in 1972. Dick has shared river stories both on and off trips over the years, and people always told him he should write a book. A few years ago he started writing about offbeat events and oddball people he had encountered, and encouraged fellow outfitter and long-time friend Bob Volpert to do the same. They encouraged other river guides and outfitters to submit stories, and after a few years, they had enough for a book. That book was Halfway to Halfway.
