Boethius’ Consolatio Philosophiae represents a climax in the philosophy of Late Antiquity, and in its combination of prose and multiple lyric forms it gives us a remarkable document of Latin literature, the effects of which on following generations can hardly be measured. This commentary, which after its original publication in 1978 is now presented in a revised and enlarged second edition, is regarded as one of the standard works in Late Latin philological studies.

"The first edition of this book immediately established itself as a standard work. Now, with great patience and industry but also a remarkably fresh re-engagement with the Consolation, G. has brought his commentary completely up to date. Boethians everywhere will salute him. And the publisher has produced a book of the highest technical quality."
