The introductory booklet authoritatively reviews the deep involvement Stanislavski, Grotowski and Chaikin – three of the twentieth century’s most influential actor trainers – had with yoga.
The DVD, through a series of audio-visually recorded workshops with student actors at the beginning of their careers, lays down some of the foundational correspondences in the relationship between yoga and actor training. Together, the booklet and DVD present a crucial leap forward in the collaboration between the two disciplines and will be a valuable resource for students and teachers of actor and performance training.
Booklet length: 68 pages
DVD running time: approx. 2 hours
Dorinda Hulton qualified as an Intermediate Senior teacher of Yoga with B.K.S. Iyengar in Poona, India, and has been teaching courses and modules incorporating Yoga in both Actor Training and Performance Making contexts in the Drama Department at Exeter University for more than forty years. She trained at the Central School of Drama where she qualified as a voice, movement and drama teacher with distinction and part of her work has been to explore ways of combining yoga with techniques she encountered at the Central School, particularly in the area of voice and movement for the actor. Maria Kapsali is a lecturer in drama in the department of Contemporary Arts at Manchester Metropolitan University. She is qualified to Introductory Junior level as a teacher of Iyengar Yoga. Her PhD entitled The Use of Yoga in Actor Training and Theatre Making examined ways in which the practice of yoga can extend beyond its use as a warm up, and inform the actor’s process in relation to specific performative and pre-performative demands. Her practice is underpinned by scholarship on, and familiarity with, current debates around the historical sources of modern postural yoga.
