Until the early 1950s Mount Everest represented a unique challenge, and more than forty years later it still continues to haunt the dreams of climbers. This book presents the story of the challenge that is Mount Everest - from the original mapping and naming of the mountain which confirmed it as the world's highest, through the early tweed-jacketed attempts by Mallory's expeditions in the 1920s, to Hillary and Tenzing's success in 1953, Junko Tabei's victory for the female sex in 1976, and the numerous expeditions of the last 20 years. A year-by-year account of all the ascents - over 150 of them- from 1973 to present day are outlined in this text, which includes 176 colour photographs and 113 historic black and white photographs.
