This is the first time that the Gnomai in the victory songs of the Greek choral lyricist Bacchylides have been subjected to systematic critical literary analysis and related to their contemporary historical context. Jan Stenger demonstrates the central significance of the Gnomai for constituting the sense of the victory song. Bacchylides skilfully adapted his Gnomai to the social environmant and the expectations of his audience.
Jan Stenger is a Research Fellow in the Department of Classical Studies at the Christian Albrechts University of Kiel, Germany.
