Renowned for its express Mallard setting a world speed record (126mph) for steam locomotives that endures to this day, the LNER was the second largest of the 'Big Four' companies to emerge from the 1923 grouping. This handbook provides detailed reference information about the LNER.
Renowned for its express Mallard setting a world speed record (126mph) for steam locomotives that endures to this day, the LNER was the second largest of the 'Big Four' companies to emerge from the 1923 grouping and also the most diverse, with the express trains from King's Cross balanced by an intensive suburban and commuter service from Liverpool Street and a high dependence on freight. Noted for its cautious board and thrifty management, the LNER gained a reputation for being poor but honest. This authoritative new book, in series with "LMS Handbook", "Southern Railway Handbook" and "GWR Handbook", provides highly detailed reference information about the LNER.

David Wragg has written more than 30 books on railway, aviation and defence subjects, including The World's Top 500 Airports published by Haynes. He has written for the Sunday Telegraph, The Spectator, The Scotsman and The Yorkshire Post.

Despite some electrification in the north, the LNER was primarily a steam railway. High-speed locomotives built for the main services included the non-stop London-Edinburgh Flying Scotsman, Silver Jubilee, Coronation and West Riding Limited. Famous for the use of articulation, with adjoining carriages sharing a bogie, on both expresses and suburban services. Serving north and east London and criticised for its slow, dirty, crowded trains, the LNER achieved much in operating such a high-intensity service entirely by steam. The Miners' Strike of 1926 and accompanying General Strike decimated the LNER's freight traffic as export markets for British coal were lost.
