The Southern Railway may not have been the most glamorous of the 'Big Four' companies that emerged from the grouping of 1923, but it was the great innovator. In the 1930s the Southern pioneered the first main-line electrification and created the largest electrified suburban railway network in the world. It was the first to have regular departures - so that passengers did not need to carry a timetable - and the first to run true international services, introducing the 'Night Ferry' through-trains from London to Paris using special ferries. This authoritative book provides highly detailed reference information about the Southern.
David Wragg has written more than 30 books on railway, aviation and defence subjects, including The World's Top 500 Airports published by Haynes. He has written for the Sunday Telegraph, The Spectator, The Scotsman and The Yorkshire Post.
The Southern's chief engineer in the later years, Oliver Bulleid, designed electric as well as steam rolling stock, and many features of his locomotives were introduced on standard BR rolling stock. Reference material includes text, tabular details and photographs of the locomotives and rolling stock, other equipment, depots, railway stations and the network. 'Some excellent appendices on locomotive headcodes, station name changes, locos inherited at the grouping, Southern-built locos and names make this our Book of the Month.' Railways Illustrated. 'Maps and a good selection of well-reproduced pictures mingle unobtrusively with the text and the layout is clear and uncluttered. A compilation such as this is no mean undertaking, and a respectable outcome is the end result.' West Somerset Railway Journal. 'Plenty of information to sink your teeth into...' Steam Railway. '...a very full and readable book that will make many much the wiser and well entertained.' Railway Modeller.
