Diabetic retinopathy is the most common complication of diabetes that results in decreased vision and blindness. Diabetic retinopathy constitutes a set of retinal abnormalities caused by damage to the microvasculature of the retina. This presentation discusses the epidemiology, pathophysiology of diabetic retinopathy including the phases of disease development, risk factors, diagnostic tests, treatments and preventive guidelines.

Zachary T. Bloomgarden, MD, has a national reputation for writing and lecturing on diabetes. He conducts weekly diabetes clinic conferences and participates in teaching rounds in the Departments of Pediatrics and Medicine at Mount Sinai. He is a member of the board of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists and serves on the Journals Managing Subcommittee of the Endocrine Society.
