The greatest achievement in combat, according to the practitioners of Kosho Ryu Kempo Karate, is the one that comes when a physical confrontation is avoided and no one is hurt. This is at the heart of Kosho Ryu Kempo Karate. To that end, the techniques offered in this book with its over 400 photographs, details the variety of methods for escaping personal injury without hurting the assailant. If physical confrontation is unavoidable, then the practitioner of this art will learn to manipulate the balance and the structure of an opponent, allowing for the maximum effectiveness in striking, throwing, and locking arts. Distinctively Buddhist in its concepts, today's practitioners have found that Kosho Ryu Kempo Karate is more than a martial art: it encompasses all aspects of life using the precepts of compassion, tolerance, balance, and power.
Today, the line of teachers in this unique form of self-defense and mind-discipline continues with Jeff Driscoll Shihan. He has been a student of the martial arts for 28 years, holding the ranks of 5th Dan in Ryu Kyu Kempo Karate, 4th Dan in Kosho Ryu Kempo, 3rd Dan in Muso Jikden Eishin Ryu Iaijutsu, and a 1st Dan in Tae Kwon Do. He currently studies and teaches Kosho Ryu Kempo, as a student of Hanshi Bruce Juchnik, and Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu Iaijutsu, under Shihan Carl Long and Hanshi Masayuki Shimabukuro . Driscoll Sensei has also been the host of the East Coast Gathering since 1998, an event geared towards bringing martial artists together from different styles and systems, in an atmosphere of sharing and learning. He has been the owner and instructor at the Driscoll Institute of the Martial Arts in Pottsville, PA, since 1986. Bruce Juchnik has been involved in the martial since 1964. He met James Mitose in 1978 and he received the Menkiokaiden (The Directive to Head an Art Form) from James Mitose in 1980 to allow him to teach the study of Kosho Ryu kempo. He also studied under other pioneers of the martial arts in the United States, including Robert Trias, Thomas S. H. Young, and Rick Alemany.
