Sports prototype racing is about endurance, for the drivers, for the teams and for the companies involved. In this story we see the effort, the blood, the sweat and the tears, reputations won and lost, life and also death. The cars, some of the most evocative ever seen, are described in detail.
Sports prototype racing is about endurance, for the drivers, for the teams and for the companies involved. In this first volume of Alpine and Renault – The Sports Prototypes we see the effort, the blood, the sweat and the tears, reputations won and lost, life and also death. Alpine had a passion and dedication for racing over a long period with stunningly beautiful, creative, slippery aerodynamic designs that allowed it to take many class wins and a few outright victories in championship racing, and ultimately, under Renault ownership and a new V6 turbo engine, outright victory at Le Mans (see volume 2). Here you will feel the passion and dedication for racing from interviews with the men involved over the many long hard years, countless innovations, the coming of radial and slick tyres, and successes and failures, all illustrated with dramatic period photographs.

Roy Smith is a retired company director who has a life long passion for motor sport, and, since 1968, Alpine Renault in particular. He began writing in the 1960s for club magazines, mainly interviews with the notables of the time. A 40-year business career in sales and marketing developed an attention for detail that was required for the preparation of this work about the Alpine Sports Prototypes and his previous book about the development of the Renault Turbo Formula 1 cars He likes to provide a good read to newcomers and hardened enthusiasts alike. He has written many motor sport and Alpine-related articles since 1989 for various magazines, and is the UK historic correspondent for the French magazine Retro Passion and the Alpine Renault magazine, Mille Miles. His next work will be entitled Amedee Gordini – a true racing legend.
