Gaze at the pale pink fairy-tale world of Okinawa during the cherry blossom season, and accompany the geishas on their magnificent parade during the Gion Matsurio festival in Kyoto. And there's more: get to know the culture and history of Zen monasteries, travel on high-speed trains, page through manga comic books, stroll in imperial gardens, and pay a visit to Shikoku, the island of the four provinces. The author and photographer use their extensive experience and great sensitivity to Japan to show us this strange, polarizing, and fascinating land.
The photographer:Hans Sauttter studied at the Fotoakademie in Munich, Germany, and has lived in Japan since 1972. He worked there as a carpenter and as a German teacher while at the same time taking photo assignments for newspapers and magazines. Today he is among the best-known photographers in Japan and works for leading Japanese and European magazines as well as for international architecture publications. The authors:Andreas Fels studied Japanology, not only because he likes sushi, but above all because the Japanese language and culture fascinated him. He and his wife, Kerstin Fels, have spent years traveling in Japan. Both have been writing for the internet magazine they founded, Japanlink.de, for more than a decade.
