Michael Freeman was born in England in 1945, studied at Brasenose College, Oxford University, and began a full-time photographic career in 1973. He has photographed extensively in Asia, both for magazines such Smithsonian, GEO, and Conde' Nast Traveller, and for numerous books. Alistair Shearer is a london-based writer specialising on asian subjects. His previous books include Buddha: The Intelligent Heart and The Hindu Vision. he has previously collaborated with freeman on The Spirit of Asia, a journey to some of Asia's most sacred places.
