Every year thousands of foreign tourists come to New Zealand to enjoy the scenery and cultural experiences on offer here. Yet many New Zealanders don't take these opportunities themselves and have limited knowledge of their own country. This book is both a celebration of the best that New Zealand has to offer and an encouragement to make the most of it. The Automobile Association has been running a high-profile and very popular campaign concentrating on the joys of our own country. People often think of foreign travel as the only exotic holiday to be had, but there is so much to see and do here at home. Organised by region, this book explores the places and activities that everyone should experience.

John McCrystal was born in Taupo and educated at the University of Auckland, from which he holds a PhD in Political Studies. He has been working as a book reviewer and freelance writer since 1990 and is a former New Zealand books editor of North and South magazine. He has published nine books of his own, including a handful of short stories and a radio drama, which was broadcast on National Radio in 2002. John's book, THE CARS WE LOVED was a finalist in the 2002 Montana Book Awards. John McCrystal lives in Wellington.
