First published in 1926, E. Powell's work seeks to redress contemporary misconceptions about North Africa.
The area known as Barbary (Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco) has, writes E. Anthony Powell, become the subject of 'popular misconceptions...even more glaring than those in respect to far remoter regions which the white man penetrates at every risk'. First published in 1926, 'In Barbary' was written in order to answer such ignorance, and the result is a volume which does indeed challenge the received opinions of the time - which refuses either to positively sanction or condemn out-of-hand the policies of the occupying French, and which takes issue with the image of the Berbers as crude and uncultured. But whilst the book is crammed with information - historical and otherwise - in support of these arguments, its value derives not only from the facts but from the energy and colour that Powell's forthright and flamboyant personality gives to them. 'In Barbary is thus not only instructive but an absolute pleasure to read.
